Beziers

Beziers

Béziers is one of oldest towns in France and a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network. In Medieval times, town was a Languedoc stronghold of Cathars - believers whom the Catholic Church condemned as heretics and thus offended with a crusade in 1209. There are several bridges across the river Orb, one of which is used for Canal du Midi. Every August, Béziers hosts the famous Feria de Béziers, a five-day event centred on bullfighting and attracting a million visitors.

Kuressaare

Kuressaare

Of three Baltic republics, only Estonia has relatively big islands on the Baltic Sea. Until World War II there were lots of Swedes living on Saaremaa island, but fled before Red Army retook the area in 1944. They are now major force behind the tourism, but many more nationals come to enjoy mild Baltic summers - not to mentioned Estonians themselves, who come in especially big quantities for Midsummer festivities. Kuressaare is the administrative centre of the island and sports a very attractive castle which is now a public museum.

Grasse

Grasse

The town is considered the world's capital of perfume. Grasse's particular microclimate encouraged the flower farming industry, and the countryside around the town is filled with scent of lavender, myrtle, jasmine, rose, orange blossom and wild mimosa. Thematic Fête du Jasmin or La Jasminade, at the beginning of August is an annual festival with fireworks, folk music groups and street performers.

Spoleto

Spoleto

First time mentioned in 241 BC by the name of Spoletum, the town was an important settlement in the times of Roman Empire. Unsurprisingly, many of ancient building that draw visitors nowadays, have a respectful age of two thousand years. There is also a majestic fortress overlooking the town from the top of the hill, several nice palaces and churches - one of which, the basilica of San Salvatore was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Since 1958, world famous Festival dei Due Mondi takes place every June. Concept of the festival is to have the worlds of American and European culture facing each other - so, there's a twin festival occurring in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, since 1977. Spoleto is a convenient day trip from Rome.

Meissen

Meissen

This beautifully preserved old German town (sometimes called a 'Cradle of Saxony') once grew out of a Slavic settlement on a small river, which is nowadays called Meisabach. A market town by 1000, it grew into an important trade centre and home to production of two famous products - Saxonian wine and fine pottery. Meissen porcelain is considered a first high quality china to be produced in the West. Both wine and pottery festivals take place every year. Town's cathedral is built on a very small plot of land, so it is one of the smallest cathedrals in Europe, but also one of the purest examples of Gothic architecture. There are also many Renaissance buildings in town.
